A LITTLE PREPARATION

Make room for discovery.

Bring the printed workbook, fallen leaves, paper, crayons, a glue stick, and child-safe scissors. A grown-up leads the AI photo activity and supervises collecting and making. Do not touch or taste unknown plants.

What we’ll explore

  • Explain why leaves look green and why some change color in fall.
  • Use leaf and plant photos to ask AI and check its guess.
  • Identify the leaf shape and vein clues AI can compare in a photo.

Narrator: Tap-tap-tap! One windy autumn morning, Pip Fox found a little golden leaf on his doorstep.

Pip: Oh no, she’s lost her tree! Will you help me find it?

Narrator: Today, you’ll become a leaf detective!

Narrator: Learn why leaves change color.

Narrator: Then, with your grown-up, ask AI to guess a tree from a leaf photo, and check if it’s right.

Narrator: Next, turn leaves into art.

Narrator: And at the end, crack Pip’s secret code!

Pip: Grab your workbook, your grown-up, and a fallen leaf. Let’s go, detectives!

Pip: Hi, detectives! It’s me, Pip. Open your workbook to page 1. Let’s read my story together!

Narrator: Tap-tap-tap! One windy autumn morning, Pip Fox opened his door. On the step sat a little golden leaf.

Narrator: “I’ve lost my tree,” she sniffled. “The wind twirled me so fast that I cannot remember where I belong.”

Pip: “Then I will help you find your home,”

Narrator: said Pip. He carried her gently to the silver birch, but its tiny leaves were not the same. Next, Pip asked the old oak, but its leaves had soft, wavy bumps.

Narrator: The little leaf drooped. “Perhaps no tree is mine.” Just then, five red leaves danced past like stars. Her five pointed tips began to tingle. Her branching veins hummed a familiar song.

Pip: “Follow them!”

Narrator: cried Pip.

Narrator: At the top of the hill stood a maple glowing red and gold. “My little leaf!” rustled the tree. The wind lifted her into one last joyful dance before laying her gently among the maple’s roots. From that day on, Pip was known as a leaf detective.

Narrator: What clues helped Pip find the leaf’s tree?

Pip: Pause the video and think!

Narrator: Turn your page upside down to check!

Narrator: Her five pointed tips and branching veins.

Pip: Leaf shape and veins are great clues. Remember them. We’ll use them again!

Pip: Page 2! Here’s what we’ll learn today.

Narrator: In this activity, you will…

Narrator: Explain why leaves look green and why some change color in fall.

Narrator: Use leaf and plant photos to ask AI and check its guess.

Narrator: Identify the leaf shape and vein clues AI can compare in a photo.

Narrator: With your grown-up, watch two short videos.

Narrator: Fall Nature Walk, with Miss Stephanie.

Narrator: And Inside a Leaf, from The Daily ECO.

Narrator: Scan the codes in your workbook, or find the links below this video.

Pip: Look and listen for clues! Pause now, and come back when you’re done.

Narrator: Welcome back! Why are leaves green?

Narrator: Turn your page upside down to check!

Narrator: Leaves have a green helper called chlorophyll. It uses sunlight to make food for the tree.

Narrator: And why do leaves change color in fall?

Narrator: In fall, leaves stop making green. Then yellow and orange show.

Pip: So the yellow and orange were hiding there all along!

Pip: Page 3, AI Fun! Can AI be a leaf detective too? Let’s find out!

Narrator: With a grown-up, find one fallen leaf and the tree it came from.

Narrator: Remember: do not touch or taste unknown plants.

Narrator: Step 1: Take two photos.

Narrator: Photo A: one leaf, close and clear.

Narrator: Photo B: the whole tree, from a safe distance.

Narrator: Step 2: Send Photo A to AI.

Narrator: Your grown-up can use any AI app you already have, like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Copilot.

Narrator: Type or say:

Narrator: “What tree is this leaf from? Name two clues.”

Narrator: AI answers with a guess and two clues.

Narrator: Step 3: Send Photo B to AI.

Narrator: In the same chat, type or say:

Narrator: “Here is the whole tree. What is your best guess now?”

Narrator: Look! AI changed its guess.

Narrator: Step 4: Find the real answer.

Narrator: Ask your grown-up to check a trusted source: a tree sign or label, a plant guidebook, or a teacher or nature expert.

Narrator: Was AI right?

Pip: Almost! AI knew it was a maple, but not which kind.

Narrator: AI matches photo patterns, like leaf shape and veins, to labels it learned.

Narrator: This is called image recognition.

Narrator: But AI can make mistakes.

Narrator: A blurry photo or a look-alike leaf can fool it.

Narrator: So always check with a trusted source.

Pip: Just like a real detective: always check the clues! Pause and try it with your grown-up.

Pip: Page 4! You checked AI’s guess. Now be the maker!

Narrator: Playing and building with your hands is one of the best ways to learn.

Narrator: Leaf Rubbing! Make a hidden leaf pattern appear by rubbing a crayon over paper.

Narrator: You need: one fallen leaf, one sheet of paper, and one crayon with the wrapper peeled off.

Narrator: Step 1: Put the leaf under the paper. The bumpy side with the veins should face up.

Narrator: Step 2: Hold the paper still. Rub gently with the side of the crayon.

Narrator: Step 3: Keep rubbing. Watch the leaf’s outline and veins appear!

Pip: Whoa, it’s like magic!

Narrator: Leaf Creature! Collect more fallen leaves. Then make a leaf creature!

Narrator: You need: fallen leaves, two sheets of paper, child-safe scissors, a glue stick, and crayons or markers.

Narrator: Step 1: Lay the paper flat. Arrange the leaves on the paper until you like your creature.

Narrator: Step 2: Lift one leaf at a time. Rub glue on its back, then press it onto the paper.

Narrator: Step 3: Draw eyes, a beak, and legs on the second sheet. Cut them out, then glue them onto the leaves.

Pip: Hoo-hoo! What creature will you make? Pause and make yours!

Pip: Last page! Let’s crack my secret code!

Narrator: Read each quiz, circle the best answer, and write its letter in the box.

Narrator: Do your three letters spell P I P?

Narrator: Quiz 1. Fall leaves turn yellow because they have…

Narrator: T: more chlorophyll.

Narrator: P: less chlorophyll.

Narrator: S: more sunlight.

Narrator: It’s P, less chlorophyll!

Narrator: Quiz 2. AI changes its guess after Photo B. What now?

Narrator: E: Trust the new guess.

Narrator: I: Check a guidebook.

Narrator: It’s I, check a guidebook!

Narrator: Quiz 3. Which leaf clues showed up in your leaf rubbing?

Narrator: N: The leaf’s smell.

Narrator: O: The tree’s name.

Narrator: P: Outline and veins.

Narrator: It’s P, outline and veins!

Pip: P… I… P! That’s me! You did it, Leaf Detective!

Narrator: Great job, detectives. See you next time!
